What to expect during your family photoshoot

Every photographer has their own approach to family photography. If you are looking for more posed studio images then I’m not the photographer for you and that’s totally ok. If you wish to have your family’s unique story with all the real and raw moments captured, then keep reading so you can find out if I might be the right photographer for you.

What can you expect during your family photoshoot? Well, you’re not going to be stacked in a triangle formation in front a white background with everyone wearing white t-shirts. Your family portrait session will take place outside doing things you would normally do as a family. This way you will feel relaxed and appear natural in your photos. 

So, how does your family enjoy time together? Maybe it’s going for a hike in the mountains or playing on the beach? Having a campfire roasting hotdogs and pinnebrød? Or perhaps cross country skiing? Think of the special moments that you will cherish as a family forever.

Getting Ready

Your family session will be tailored for you and set to tell your family’s story. A week prior to your session we will jump on a quick phone or zoom call to discuss the details of your photoshoot. The perfect location and time will be confirmed. What to wear will be discussed as well, but keep in mind that it’s important to wear what feels most natural and comfortable for you.

I want to know all about your family during this call. What are your children’s hobbies/likes, how you spend time together as a family and more. This way the session can be planned specifically for your family. 

Your Family Photoshoot

On the day of your family photo session we will meet at our arranged location about 5-10 minutes before your scheduled time. This is when we will say hello and get acquainted as you unload your family from the car. 

Your photoshoot will be relaxed. It will be a time to enjoy being together which will give you more natural images. You might enjoy a nice walk down the path, listening to the giggles of your children as you swing them between you. You may sit by the lake or among the trees. I’ll be there in the background to capture the unfiltered moments whether it be: the laughter of your children as you tickle them, their screams of excitement as you chase them around, that special hug you didn’t expect from your toddler, the precious snuggles with your baby. 

While you are sitting or walking doing your thing, I will be running around you capturing you from different angles. Don’t feel you need to move or look at me, I’d actually prefer you forget I’m there at all and continue to look at your family. Play, laugh, tickle and cuddle. During the session, you will be given some direction so that the light and your position is the most flattering. I may give you a few prompts such as to tickle each other or to look in a certain direction but other than that you will be left to enjoy the family time. 

Your family session can be up to 2 hours long. There are no exact time limits on sessions so you have plenty of time to get comfortable in front of the camera and let your story unfold naturally. You don’t need to rush or force anything. No need to worry if your kids get fussy. Just snuggle your kiddos and I’ll do the rest. When needed we can stop for snack breaks for the little ones. 

Photo delivery

You’ve invested time having your precious family moments captured so now it’s time for me to  go through your photos and put together a gallery of the best 40 images. Each one will be individually processed so they are perfected for you. Within 3 weeks of your photoshoot your gallery will be delivered to you which is when you can enjoy viewing your story and picking your favourite images to download, share and print.
